It’s that time of year again! You’ve survived another cold New England winter, mud season has passed, and all the flowers are starting to bloom. This blog post covers the best locations for flower & spring engagement photos, as well as summer all throughout New England. For all the floral fanatics out there, I’ll cover the peak blooms of various flowers (such as cherry blossoms, lilacs, tulips, and lupines, etc.) and the best locations to really showcase these beautiful blooms as your engagement photo backdrop.
These flowers only come for a short time each year so it’s important to book your couples session in advance so you can snag a spot during a peak bloom period. YOUR PEAK FLOWER BLOOM FAST FACTS:
- Although these time periods can fluctuate a bit each year depending on the winter weather, these are the typical trends we’ve seen in the past few years. I always scout these locations ahead of time so you never need to worry about showing up to a location and the flowers not being in bloom for your scheduled session.
Cherry blossoms: Mid April to Early May
Lilacs: Early May
Tulips: Late April to Early MA
Lupines: Early to Mid June
Lavender Fields: Mid June to Early July
Hydrangea: Last week of June to Mid July
Sunflowers: Late August to Early September
WHEN DO CHERRY BLOSSOMS BLOOM IN BOSTON
The cherry blossom trees in Boston come to life mid April to early May.
BEST LOCATIONS FOR A BOSTON CHERRY BLOSSOM ENGAGEMENT SESSION :
If you’re considering a cherry blossom couples session for your spring engagement photos then the top locations are the Charles River Esplanade, Brookline Reservoir, and the Arnold Arboretum (I’ve scouted the park and I know exactly where the best trees are and the closest gate access points).
WHEN DO LILACS BLOSSOMS BLOOM IN MASSACHUSETTS:
Lilacs typically bloom the first two weeks of May in Boston, Massachusetts, but you may see blooms late April on Cape Cod. Top tip: you’ll definitely want to avoid Arnold Arboretum on Lilac Sunday which takes place the second Sunday of May each year unless you are doing a sunrise session.
BEST LOCATIONS FOR A LILAC ENGAGEMENT SESSION:
The gorgeous lilac collection in the Arnold Arboretum can be found by the edge of Bussey Hill Road. Park at the Centre Street Gate for the easiest walking access.
WHEN DO TULIPS BLOOM:
Tulips bloom late April to early May.
BEST LOCATIONS FOR A TULIP ENGAGEMENT SESSION:
If you are looking to incorporate a few tulips into your spring engagement session, then the Boston Public Garden will absolutely do the trick. If you are the go big or go home kinda couple and want to have your couples session in a large tulip field then you’ll absolutely LOVE Golden Hour Tulips Farm in Lakeville, MA (additional photography fee of $30/hr or $60/day will be added onto your Meghan Lynch Photography couples session price) and Wicked Tulips in Exeter RI (additional photography fee 60 minute single session for $50 or their multiple session option of 90 minutes for $75 will be added onto your Meghan Lynch Photography couples session price).
WHEN DO LUPINES BLOOM IN NEW HAMPSHIRE:
The beautiful lupines bloom early to mid June (mostly mid June).
BEST SPOTS FOR A NEW HAMPSHIRE LUPINE ENGAGEMENT SESSION:
Roughly 2 hours and 45 minutes from Boston, a lupine engagement session in Sugar Hill, New Hampshire is 100% worth the drive. My go to spots not only feature the gorgeous lupines but also showcase the white mountains in the background as well.
WHEN DO LAVENDER FIELDS BLOOM:
In New England, lavender fields bloom mid June to early July.
BEST SPOTS FOR A LAVENDER FIELD ENGAGEMENT SESSION:
What if I told you I can make your dreams of having a Provence, France lavender field engagement session right here in New England? It’s true! The following farms in Massachusetts and Rhode Island can bring your French lavender field dreams to life! If you are looking to stay local to Massachusetts then the smaller lavender field at Cape Cod Lavender Farm will be perfect. If you want to channel all the French vibes and have your session in a massive lavender field then your clear winner is The Farm at SummitWynds (additional photography permit fee of $300 required in addition to your Meghan Lynch Photography couples session price) .
WHEN DO HYDRANGEAS BLOOM IN MASSACHUSETTS:
The hydrangea bushes in Massachusetts typically bloom the last week of June through the third week of July.
BEST LOCATIONS FOR A HYDRANGEA ENGAGEMENT SESSION:
Cape Cod is famous for it’s colorful hydrangea bushes ranging from blue to purple to pink! Luckily you can find them all over the Cape so you have free range where you want your session location to be.
WHEN DO SUNFLOWERS BLOOM:
Sunflowers bloom each year late August to early September.
BEST LOCATIONS FOR A SUNFLOWER ENGAGEMENT SESSION:
No matter where you live in New England, there are plenty of options for sunflower fields to have your summer or fall engagement session. Those in Massachusetts can check out Colby Farm in Newbury and
Tangerini’s Farm in Millis, MA ( additional $50 photography permit fee in addition to the Meghan Lynch Photography couples session price). Other amazing options to check out are Sweet Berry Farm in RI for your sunflower session or Buttonwood Farm in Griswold, Connecticut.
