Wear whatever you feel best in and 100% comfortable.

This is the number one rule to follow. I want you to feel comfortable and confident throughout your session so pick something that resembles YOUR style. The last thing I’d want is for you to wear something and not feel like yourselves. Do you have an outfit already in mind from your closet that you feel like a rockstar every time you wear it out? That’s perfect! Notice you’re wearing a certain outfit in all your favorites photos you have on your phone? Awesome- and double bonus since you already know that you like how the outfit itself photographs!

How many outfits should we bring to a session?

Lots of couples bring two outfits to wear throughout their session. Some people like to have one outfits that is dressy and one that is more casual, but it’s totally up to you two! We can use a public restroom if we are in an urban area or my handy dandy pop up changing tent if we are in a more rustic area without restrooms around.

Find outfits that compliment each other, but don’t match.

It’s best not to have both of you wearing the same color. You can use any of these photos within the blog post as inspiration as you’re pulling ideas. You can never go wrong with a white button up for the guys!

What colors should we wear for our engagement photos?

Neutrals are awesome for couples portrait photography (black, white, gray, and sometimes brown and beige). We want the photos to be on you two and your connection with your faces & love being the stars of the shoot! It’s best to avoid fluorescent or bright colors which can detract the attention off your gorgeous selves.

Remember solid colors photograph the prettiest!

You’ll want to avoid stripes & patterns (unless they are small) as well as any outfits with text, graphics, or large logos.

Top tip- Empty those pockets!

I suggest bringing an extra bag to throw your keys, wallet, and phones in. These can really stand out in pockets so it’s best to leave them in a bag off to the side!

If we are having your engagement session on the beach or on a mountain- bring an extra pair of shoes!

Beachgoers! If our session is on a sandy beach I suggest just wearing sandals or going barefoot. If you’re heading to a mountain summit with me then pack your shoes and wear your hiking boots up until we reach the location.

Women wear a long dress or skirt to create movement in your photos!

If you’re someone who wears dresses & skirts naturally then wearing ones that aren’t form fitting towards the bottom can create epic photos by incorporating movement into your images. With outfits like these they can really come to life while walking, tossing the ends behind you, “practicing your first dance” as your significant other spins you around, or even if it’s windy and the dress is blowing in the wind behind you.

Extra examples for what a guy should wear at an engagement session

  • Top: Suit or sports jacket, white button up shirt, or a sweater in the fall
  • Bottoms: Dark colored jeans, Khakis/chinos, Dress Pants (best to avoid shorts)
  • Belts: Brown or black belts depending on your pant choice
  • Shoes: Black or brown dress shoes

MY FAVORITE BOSTON HAIR & MAKE-UP ARTISTS

Totally not required, but if you’d like to get your hair and make-up done before your session these are my favorites my couples have worked with in the past. These artists are phenomenal and are all about enhancing the natural beauty you have!

One last time: The Dos & Don’ts for Engagement Photo Outfits

Do:

Wear neutrals & solid colors

Wear something you feel comfortable & amazing in

Bring two outfits if you’d like

Empty pockets & bring an extra bag to put them in

Bring an extra pair of shoes for those beach or mountain sessions

Make it a date day!

Dont’:

Avoid stripes & patterns

Avoid shorts

Don’t match colors

Don’t wear something with text, large logos, or graphics

Don’t wear sneakers, t-shirts, or tank tops

A FEW OTHER THINGS TO KEEP IN MIND FOR A COUPLES PHOTOGRAPHY SESSION:

LIGHTING- you can have the most gorgeous outfits on, but if the lighting is bad this can really affect the final looks of photos. Since no one wants to be squinting staring into the sun with their eyes watering, I only photograph sessions around sunrise or sunset.

PLAY OFF OF THE SEASONS- If you want to highlight a certain season and embrace nature whether that’s brilliant foliage or colorful hydrangea’s in bloom on Cape Cod then reach out and I’ll let you know the best dates so we don’t miss these prime times.

MAKE IT A DATE DAY- Since you are getting all dolled up, continue celebrating and showing off your gorgeous selves with a reservation for brunch (sunrise sessions) or dinner (sunset sessions).

A fun couple in love (that’s you!)+ a beautiful location+golden light+ gorgeous outfits= a pure magical photo session
