Wear whatever you feel best in and 100% comfortable
Wear what you normally wear, just elevated! This is the number one rule to follow. I want you to feel comfortable and confident throughout your session so pick something that resembles YOUR style. The last thing I’d want is for you to wear something and not feel like yourself. If you’re someone who never wears dresses, don’t wear a dress just for a branding photoshoot if thats not what clients will see you in regularly. Think about what you wear when you meet a client for the first time, is it a cute top with jeans? Is it a dress or a full suit? Is it a flannel and cargo pants? Don’t change who you are just because you’re having your photo taken. Your clients want to know what to expect from you, so wear what you normally wear, just the best version of it!
Top tip: Once you go through your closet or purchase outfits, take photos on your cell phone of you in them to make sure you like how they look on camera. Send your pics to me so I can map out which outfits might be best for specific backdrops or sitting poses, etc.
Wear your brand colors
If you have defined brand colors, wear them throughout your session (props in brand colors are great too!). This will help curate your social media feed and allow images to flow seamlessly throughout website design.
The dont’s when it comes to your wardrobe
- Avoid wearing items with tiny prints like small stripes, houndstooth or checker print. Solids, items with texture, or items with larger prints are best.
- Avoid wearing oversized items or ill-fitting items. It’s best to wear something more fitted or slightly flowy so we aren’t competing with your wardrobe and you are able to SHINE! The biggest rule is if you want to look less “big” – avoid wearing lots of layers. Instead, wear a stretchy long sleeve fitted shirt or a blouse with some movement and a fitted jacket. Cardigans, oversized shirts / dresses or lots of flowy layers can actually make you look bigger.
How many outfits should I bring to my personal branding photography session?
For a quick 30 minute headshot session with 1-2 backdrops, you just need to bring one outfit. For a 90 minute session, I recommend 2-3 outfits to show you in a number of settings (headshot, working at a desk, cozying up on the couch, downtown at your favorite spots, etc.)
If you’re going for a more luxury look for your branding photoshoot:
- Choose high-quality natural fabrics like silk, wool, and cashmere.
- Ensure clothes are perfectly tailored
- Choose colors in beige, black, white, and navy (you can even have your top and pants be the same color)

Plan ahead for the seasons
If you schedule your branding session in February you might have a sweater on but also bring along some cute summer dresses to market more for summertime. Make a note whether you want to target a specific season or bring along props for a certain holiday.
Please make sure whatever you wear is fully steamed or ironed
If you plan to wear something that wrinkles easily, please arrive with it hung up on a hanger and change into your outfit when you get to your photoshoot to avoid wrinkles from sitting in your car.
Remember, wardrobe is just one piece of the puzzle
You can have an incredible outfit, but if the location or lighting isn’t good your images won’t live up to their potential. For outdoor sessions, golden light at sunrise or sunset are best. Skip the cluttered home or office and opt for a studio space with gorgeous light, backdrops, and various settings.

Final top tips prepping for your branding photoshoot:
- If we are doing close-ups of you holding your phone or camera, you can leave your nails without polish (make sure they aren’t chipped) or give them a fresh coat
- Wear nude undergarments and make sure they fit well with your chosen outfits
- Order clothes in multiple sizes if you’re unsure. That way you don’t have to rush before your session date
- Take a photo of you on your phone in your contender outfits to make sure you like how it looks in an image
- If you’re brining accessories or props, put them in separate bags or a suitcase so they are organized for each look
