Eloping in Italy is always a good idea. From Florence’s iconic Italian landmarks, the dramatic scenery of Lake Como, and the breathtaking jagged peaks of the Dolomites, Italy has a special place for everyone. Spend your destination elopement immersed in Italian culture, taking in views of Tuscany’s rolling hills, or relaxing on a gondola ride in Venice. What better way to start your marriage than to celebrate saying “I Do” with Italian wine and gelato! Here is a breakdown of the best locations to elope in Italy.

The Legalities of Eloping in Italy

The US Embassy site provides all the information you need about making your Italian wedding official.

Florence

The capital of Italy’s Tuscany region, Florence epitomizes Italian charm. You don’t have to be an arts or history enthusiast to appreciate the stunning architecture around every corner. Having been a resident of this magical city for 5 months, I’d love to be your local guide- I know where all the best gelato can be found! With an elopement in Florence, you can climb the steps of the Duomo or Giotto’s Bell Tower, head to the Galleria dell’Accademia to marvel at David, take an authentic Italian cooking class at the San Lorenzo market (my old neighborhood), and finish the day sipping wine with your soul mate while watching the sunset with panoramic views at the Piazzale Michelangelo.

Rome

Another option for your Italian elopement is heading to the center of the Roman Empire. Walking through St.Peter’s Basilica, touring the Colosseum, and making a wish at the Trevi Fountain are just a few of the ways to have an unforgettable elopement in Rome.

Verona

Famous for the setting of Shakespeare’s “Romeo and Juliet” ( but your love story will have a much happier ending), Verona is a medieval town in northern Italy. Spend your day walking through Juliet’s house and on her balcony or catch a summer opera performance at the Arena.

Lucca

Roughly an hour and a half train ride from Florence, Lucca is another spot that shouldn’t be missed! Climb the clock tower to see 360 view of this beautiful city in Tuscany, browse the shops along the cobblestone streets, or explore Lucca by bike beside their historic city walls.

Other Incredible Tuscany Locations for Eloping in Italy (aside from Florence and Lucca)

Siena, San Gimignano, Montepulciano, and Monteriggioni are just a few of the medieval towns located in the beautiful hills of Tuscany’s rolling countryside. Outside of the hustle and bustle, you can spend your day taste testing wine at the local vineyards and learn about about the entire process from growing grapes to sipping your favorite name brands you drink at home.

Seaside Locations for Eloping in Italy

Venice

Venice or the famous “Floating City” is the capital of northern Italy’s Veneto region. Stroll the Piazza San Marco, view the Bridge of Sighs, walk the Rialto bridge looking over the Grand Canal or take a romantic gondola ride through Venice’s charming canals.

Porto Venere

Porto Venere (the neighbor to Cinque Terre) sits on the Ligurian coast line. You can hop on a ferry boat or take in the jaw dropping ocean cliffs while hiking on The High Trail as you are welcomed by Castello Doria. This area is also famous for their pesto and I can attest it is the best I’ve had in my life.

Cinque Terre

Iconic Cinque Terre makes up five villages: Monterosso, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola and Riomaggiore. You can relax on one of the many beautiful beaches, marvel at the rainbow houses, go hiking between towns, and have some of the world’s best seafood caught in the local fishing villages.

Adventurous Italian Mountain Elopement

Italian Alps + Dolomites Mountain Range

A Unesco World Heritage Centre, the Dolomites make up one of the most famous mountain ranges in the world. Planning on hiking around the Tre Cime di Lavaredo on your wedding day? You can spend the night in Cortina D’ Ampezzo, the home for the 1956 Olympic Winter Games or one of the rifugios (mountain huts) close to the trailhead. Whether you are an avid hiker or not, the Dolomites provide magnificent hikes for all levels whether you want easy flat trails with spectacular views or get the adrenaline pumping on a via ferrata tour.
